Pliè Like a Pro and Spring Through April

plie1There are two types of Pliè.  Demi and Grande.  Demi means 1/2 bend and Grande means full bend.  Two properly demonstrated pliè are shown in this picture above.  In a demi pliè the heels never disconnect from the floor.  A grande pliè will, however allow the heels to disconnect from the floor,  In order to recover, the dancer must push his/her heels down to reconnect with the floor.  The only exception to this will be in 2nd position, where the heels will stay connected to the floor at all times.  Remember, the core body needs to feel like an elevator; going straight down and straight up.

  1. The Descent:  Begin by stacking your axis/atlas (See;  Take Spotting Out of Your Neck) directly on top of you tailbone. Execute the pliè by starting to go straight down (like an elevator) until the back of your heels are stretched.  All the time remembering to keep your shins perfectly aligned over your toes.
  2. Continue to lower your body down (as demonstrated in the picture above) until you’ve created a diamond shape with your legs.
  3. The Ascent:  Begin by pressing your heels down to reconnect with the floor so you return to your demi pliè.  Do not allow your body alignment to be compromised in the process.
  4. While keeping your turn-out, straighten your knees completely.

Pliè is the true beginning of understanding “Turn-Out”.  Simply completing 4 correctly executed pliè in each position a day will strengthen your turn-out.  Pliè is the true foundation for all dance steps.  A better pliè creates a better dancer.  So practice, practice, practice.  But remember:  Practice does not make perfect.  Practice makes consistent.  So practice correctly!!!

Take Spotting Out of Your Neck

Atlas-axis-dens-articulation1

Of the 24 (not counting the sacrum and coccyx), two vertebrae are fortunate enough to have names. The atlas (C01) and axis (C02) are two of the most important vertebrae in the spine. Without them, head and neck movement would be impossible and therefore dancers wouldn’t be able to spot!

The atlas and axis vertebrae are the two most superior bones in the vertebral column. They are part of the seven cervical vertebrae. The atlas is the top-most bone, sitting just below the skull; it is followed by the axis. Together, they support the skull, facilitate neck movement, and protect the spinal cord. (Think of them as BFFs—you won’t find one without the other.)

With all this in mind spotting has to happen with the rotation of the atlas around the axis.  When executed properly the actual back of your neck will lengthen. Spotting will then generate from the base of the skull not the bottom of the neck.

Spot Like a Pro!

Spot your way into March!!!!

As we all know spotting is very importand for performing all turns.  To put it simply, without a good spot, you won’t be able to pirouette. So how do you know if you have a good spot?

A good spot is achieved through lots of practice. Some dancers can’t understand why they can’t do more than a single pirouette but fail to realize that their spot, or lack thereof, is the culprit. Spotting is the key to getting all the way around in a turn, and getting all the way around again and again. A quick turn of the head with fixated eyes helps your body stay balanced and keeps you from becoming dizzy.

Try it:

Before you attempt your turn, pick out an object in front of you to focus your eyes on. If you are forced to spot a mirror, try sticking a small piece of blue tape on the mirror in front of you, at eye level.

Focus on your spot as you begin your turn.  Keep your eyes focused on the spot as long as you can and then at the last second, snap your head around to allow your eyes to quickly relocate the spot. Remember to keep your head in perfect alignment with the rest of your body.  Don’t forget to bring your shoulders and your hips around to be in perfect alignment as well.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes!!

Go Tell It On The Mountain

The theme of our Christmas benefit show this year is “Go Tell It on the Mountains”. It will be at Skyridge Elementary School, 800 Perkins Way, Auburn on Thursday, December 19th at 6:30 PM. The performance is free to all. All we ask is if you can, give from your heart. We are looking forward to seeing you all there and celebrating the birth of our Lord with you. We have two families that need our help this year to make their Christmas as happy as possible. The two families are:

Family #1: Brad and Grace Kibler

Children:   Lily (girl, age 2)  size 3T

Ben (boy, age 1)  size 18months

Family #2: Annalee Payton

Children:   Callie (girl, age4)  size 6T

Noah (boy, age 2)  size 2T to 3T

Hudson (boy, age 9 months)  size 18 months

Of course, gift cards and cash will be a blessing to them as well. Please bring gifts wrapped and labeled for the families and children to the studio or the night of the show.

Thank you all for your giving spirit. It is amazing to me to see each year just how giving and loving you all are. I do believe that the families here at Pamelot are the cream of the crop. Thank you for being so wonderful and loving.

Now, let’s “Go Tell It on the Mountains” that Jesus Christ is born and is the reason for the season!

We love you all.  Merry Christmas.
